38 Ecobytes

Ecobytes is run by Matthew Carroll and Meinhard Benn. Our infrastructure consists of two servers (Otter/Berlin, Polecat/Nuremberg) and our personal laptops. The long term vision of our hosting project is to supply Internet hosting on servers built from the least environmentally harmful parts and powered entirely by renewable energy. Our latest addition "Polecat" already runs on hydroelectric energy provided by power plants along the Rhine river.

We also envision to become a resource for knowledge about environmentally sound and socially just computing. In our personal work we combine our common passion for sustainability and information technology by assisting various groups and individuals with their day to day computer work, and especially with their Internet related activities.

We strongly believe in Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) and therefore our server is running on Debian GNU/Linux and we almost exclusively use FLOSS for our work. We encourage our users and everyone else to use FLOSS applications and help people to migrate to FLOSS. Meinhard also gives speeches and workshops about FLOSS related topics along his travels.

Ecobytes came into existence around June 2006 when we decided on a name for our hosting project (before that it was just called benn.org hosting). It has never formally been founded, but organically grew out of our work on the same web server and the desire to give this activity its own identity. Matthew and Meinhard work together since 2004 when they met at the EYFA winter meeting in Pula/Croatia.
