The ICTA/R&D summer school come as a warm up to the 5th international conference on degrowth, hosted in Budapest this year.Using various teaching tools, such as academic lectures, discussions or participative workshops, this event will thus try to tackles issues around embracing and implementing the degrowth frame within communities and societal organizations; around the integration of the diversity of degrowth sources, strategies and actors into a single proposal; around South-North and North-South dynamics, and so on. Around the world, a myriad of bottom-up local initiatives challenge the narrative of growth-driven prosperity. The importance of deliberation and building bridges bring us to focus on areas of convergence between EJ and degrowth. Firstly, the initiatives that take place in urban context, where most of the people in the global North live, will be explored. To this end we will use the unique opportunity of having new municipal council in Barcelona, rooted in the city’s civil society, social movements and solidarity economy networks. Secondly, the defence of the commons, and the processes of communing, will be embraced as a theoretical base for developing degrowth proposals. Thus we will focus on effective collective practices and radically democratic solutions for organising social relationships and serve material needs.Last but not least one day will be dedicated to a visit and exploration of a nearby environmental conflict, from where participants will move on to Can Masdéu, an occupied peri-urban, semi-rural, intentional community and social center on the outskirts of Barcelona, dedicated to experiencing social and environmental sustainability. 2005829 Research & Degrowth, Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals, Universitat Autonòma de BarcelonafalseDD/MM/YYYY

Where:

Rhineland, Germany

Taking place in the Rhineland (Germany), this Climate Camp is in line with other climate movements (such as the Summer School on Degrowth and Environmental Justice in Barcelona) and entails key features such as:

  • living alternatives together: anti-authoritarian self-organisation, our own energy supply, compost toilets, music and much more!
  • creating networks. At the camp it’s not only people who meet, but also movements.
  • educating ourselves. There will be courses, workshops, open space, panel discussions, spaces and events for children and teenagers, and a cultural programme. We will deal with a diverse range of topics, from theoretical analysis of climate change to practical stuff like building a windmill. Each day there will be a specific topic, addressed in different kinds of events and discussed with everyone, for example “understanding systems“ or “developing utopias“. You can find more information on our homepage.
  • developing actions. There have always been actions protesting against coal over the last few years at the Climate Camp. This year, after the Degrowth Summer School has ended, the ActionLab will be a guest at the Climate Camp.

The main objective of this event is to provide people with new ideas and schemes to ensure a good, sustainable lifestyle for everyone.

From the August 19 till 23, we will put degrowth into action under the theme of “Skills for System Change!”. We want to analyse current developments of society, envision common utopias and learn the very practical skills needed to participate in a social-ecological transformation: How do I found a cooperative together with other people? How do we build a wind turbine? What is “sustainable activism” and how do I facilitate large assemblies?Degrowth Summer School at the Climate CampLike last year, the Summer School will take place at the Climate Camp in the Rhineland. The camp runs from August 19 till 29, so the Summer School is only the beginning. The Climate Camp is all about education, building alliances, actions… and about living tomorrow’s society today – social, ecological and organized by grassroots democracy! The exact venue within the Rhineland’s lignite mining region is yet to be confirmed, but you can already book your tickets to “Erkelenz”.The courses…We will delve into the topics of the Summer School in courses that run for several days. and so much more!It is also important to us to have a lot of space for discussions and life on the camp.
